TIDELINE

AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE / EXCLUSIVE TO CHIPPEN ST. THEATRE

“A Kafkaesque Odyssey” Variety

After the unexpected death of a father he hardly knew, Wilfrid is coerced to bury the body in his father’s homeland.

He is helped in his quest by a movie director and one of King Arthur’s knights, both farcical versions of Wilfrid’s own psyche.

Along the way, he acquires friends all of whom dream of a better life and when confronted by a war-torn country, Wilfrid finds an additional corpse is one too many. Only if he makes it to the Tideline, will he be able to bury his father.

Following the critically acclaimed Scorched, the epic Tideline is the second play of award-winning Lebanese-Canadian playwright Wajdi Mouawad to hit the Australian stage.

“A magical night. A triumph!” Le Figaro, France.

“Not to be missed” L’Orient-Le Jour, Lebanon

WARNING: Tideline contains sexual references, coarse language and explicit violent war descriptions. 16y+ only.

AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE

EXCLUSIVE TO THE OLD 505 THEATRE

On the Day of the DeadFrida Kahlo is cooking and while she waits for her guests to arrive, she evokes Diego Rivera, Nelson Rockefeller, Leon Trotsky, exposes her opinion on art, Mexico, the United States, France and of course, the memory of her terrible accident and the presence of death.

Humberto Robles’s seminal work Viva La Vida, inspired by authentic documents, materials and memoirs from Frida Kahlo, reveals the woman behind the icon, the artist beyond the face printed on millions of bags, wallets and other paraphernalia.

This “mesmerising and compelling show is a treat by any theatrical standards. A must-see.” London Theatre Guide.

Théâtre Excentrique brings Ionesco’s iconic play back to Australia in an updated translation with baroque music from the 17th century.

King Bérenger the First is dying. His kingdom is falling apart. He can’t rule over his army anymore, nor tell the rain to fall, nor the trees to grow. He is dying and there is nothing he can do about it. Queen Marguerite is keeping track of time. “You will die in 1 hour and 30 minutes!” But the king refuses to listen. He chooses instead to love Queen Marie. “1 hour and 13 minutes left!” The clock is ticking… Surrounded by his two wives, his cleaning lady, his doctor and a guard, Bérenger is learning to accept the inevitable.

This is Ionesco’s absurd style at its best: a meditation both burlesque and powerful on life, death and other incurable diseases.

I’d Rather Goya Robbed Me of My Sleep than Some Other Son of a Bitch

BY RODRIGO GARCÍA – TRANSLATED FROM SPANISH BY WILLIAM GREGORY

AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE  – Old 505 Theatre, Sydney 2017

“With GOYA, Théâtre Excentrique have exceeded their reliably high standard.”              Lisa Thatcher

“An intense, strange, wild and wonderful production.”  Sydney Arts Guide

“Director Anna Jahjah creates a sense of urgency appropriate to the writing.”               Suzy Goes See

“Gerry Sont’s easy flexibility and energy knows no bound and accompanying music by Sister Ursuline was sublime.”  The Buzz from Sydney

“An original production for an original play, which owes its success to strong direction, high production values and the ability of Gerry Sont to encompass both the humour and the agony of the play’s protagonist.”  South Sydney Herald

“Rodrigo García’s argument for the soothing power of high art is expressed with crackling energy.” – The Guardian, UK

A dissolute father has a master plan to educate his sons: at night, break into the Prado Museum to see Goya’s black paintings while eating chorizo, drinking scotch and sniffing coke. On the side, fly in a hip philosopher from Germany as their guide. Sixty minutes of provocation and screaming to survive. Anything but f…king Disneyland!

Rodrigo García’s seminal work I’d Rather Goya Robbed Me of My Sleep than Some Other Son of a Bitch’ will introduce local audiences to one of Europe’s premier playwrights and his political, powerful, violent and extremely controversial style.

This one man show is set to challenge the ideals we hold true with “an explosive mix of vitality and disarray” – Libération, France

BEIRUT ADRENALINE

BY HALA GHOSN AND JALIE BARCILON
TRANSLATED FROM FRENCH BY KRIS SHALVEY AND ANNA JAHJAH

WORLD PREMIERE IN ENGLISH – Downstairs Belvoir, Sydney 2017

“A mesmerizing production, excellently directed by Anna Jahjah.”                                    Sydney Arts Guide

“A fantastically diverse cast delivered some of the most committed and professional performances I’ve seen on Sydney stages.”  Broadwayworld.com

“We laugh with the characters just as we despair for the hopelessness of their revolving situation. Highly recommended.”  LisaThatcher

“A powerful, deeply moving, and often painfully funny exploration of the civil war.” South Sydney Herald

“It’s director Anna Jahjah’s latest triumph for Theatre Exentrique. Fresh, engaging and relevant.” Altmedia

It’s 1986 – The Daher family is separated by the war in Lebanon. Zyad and his sister Mona escape to Paris, while their brother Marwan is stuck in Beirut. He kills time on his balcony, chatting with his new neighbours. There is no electricity, hardly any water, checkpoints everywhere and yes, the occasional bombing and killing. Yet life goes on, alongside the hopes and dreams that make it all bearable.

Alternating between Paris and Beirut, between the Western world and the Orient, the play is a powerful insight into the Lebanese conflict and, indeed, into how all of us as humans deal with adversity.

After rave reviews in France and Lebanon, BEIRUT ADRENALINE finally opened in Australia at the Downstairs Theatre / Belvoir St Theatre, Sydney.

“You must see Beirut Adrenaline. When you come out of the theatre, you feel you understand the craziness better.” Libération, France

Listen to an interview of director Anna Jahjah in English, French or Arabic on Radio Skid Row, SBS French and SBS Arabic 24. It’s a global world after all…
